About the Everglades

The Everglades National Park is a 1.5 million acre National Park and Preserve in South Florida. The Everglades is a diverse ecosystem made of 9 habitats (marshes, coastal mangroves, and pine rock lands, & more). The Everglades is actually a slow moving river that moves southward. This is where it gets it's name "River of Grass". It is America's Largest Sub Tropical Wetland.

It attracts some of the most sought out birds for bird watchers since it contains over 350 species of birds. The dry season is the best time to watch birds. The dry season is from November to April Florida is also the Fishing Capital of the world and the Everglades is a big part of it because 300 species of both freshwater and salt water call it home. 23 endangered or threatened species inhabit the Florida Everglades including the Florida Panther and the American Crocodile. The Everglades is also the only place Alligators and Crocodiles Coexist.

As much as half of the Everglades has been destroyed due to construction and draining projects. There are many efforts to conserve the Everglades and improve our water management. One out of every 3 Floridians drinks water from the Everglades so the conservation of the Everglades is a very important subject.
